Spotlight Feature: Francis A. Pommett III – Law, Lessons, and Life Beyond the Courtroom

Attorney Francis Pommett III didn’t set out to become a personal injury attorney just for the courtroom wins. Over more than 25 years of legal practice, he’s seen the law as more meaningful.

“It’s not just about the case,” he says. “It’s about the person behind it.”

Attorney Francis Pommett is based in Baltimore, Maryland, and practices at the Law Offices of Francis A. Pommett III, LLC. 

His focus is personal injury law, nursing home abuse, and appellate cases. But ask him what his real work is, and he’ll tell you it’s about trust, fairness, and showing up when people need help most.

A Foundation Built on Service

Attorney Francis Pommett graduated from McDaniel College (formerly Western Maryland College) in 1991 with a degree in political science. 

He earned his Juris Doctor from the University of Baltimore School of Law in 1996. He then continued his studies at Georgetown University Law Center, completing a Master of Laws (LL.M.) in International and Comparative Law in 2001.

His first legal job was at the Solicitor General’s Office in the U.S. Department of Justice. That experience gave him a close-up view of complex federal cases. However, after gaining experience, Francis chose to move into private practice.

“I wanted to work directly with people,” he says. “I wanted to be someone they could call, someone they trusted to stand up for them.”

Learning Through Adversity

Francis has represented clients in courts all across Maryland. He’s worked in every state district court in the jurisdiction and even argued before the U.S. Supreme Court. 

Along the way, Attorney Francis Pommett learned that preparation, patience, and empathy matter as much as legal skill.

He recalls one of his early cases involving a family devastated by an accident. “We faced some real roadblocks—insurance issues, expert disputes, even procedural delays,”. 

Attorney Francis Pommett says. “But we kept pushing. We built the case piece by piece. And we won. Not just in court, but in giving that family a chance to move forward.”

Francis believes that some of the biggest lessons in his career came not from victories but from challenges.

“You don’t learn much when everything goes perfectly,” he says. “But you grow when things get hard, and you keep going anyway.”

A Human Approach to Law

Francis’s approach to law is grounded in real-world experience. He knows that most clients are coming to him during difficult times.

Moreover, he explained that people are in pain, stressed, and scared. His job is to guide them through these challenges, ensure they feel heard, and provide them with options. 

Furthermore, Attorney Francis Pommett also mentioned that empathy is one of the most important tools in an attorney’s toolbox. 

According to him, while knowing the law is essential, understanding what clients are going through is crucial for success.

Beyond the Office

Attorney Francis Pommett is often found in the community when he’s not in the courtroom or the office. 

He supports local youth sports programs and 4-H and is active in St. Ursula Catholic Church. 

Furthermore, he also volunteers his time to help local causes and mentor young professionals.

“Being part of a community means giving back to it,” he says. “You can’t just serve people in court and disappear. You have to show up outside of work too.”

He finds that time spent outside the office helps him stay grounded. Whether coaching or just spending time with his family, it reminds him of why he chose this path in the first place.

Looking Ahead

While technology is changing the legal field, Francis believes the human side of law will always matter.

“Yes, there are tools now that make research faster or automate paperwork,” he says. “But no software can sit with a grieving family or explain a hard truth with compassion. That’s where we still matter as attorneys.”

He also continues to write blogs and resources for people trying to understand the legal process. 

Furthermore, he mentioned that recent articles cover topics like expert witnesses, small business law, and the lessons he’s learned from years of litigation.

“Writing helps me think through the work,” he says. “If I can explain something clearly to someone who’s never stepped into a courtroom, then I know I understand it myself.”

On Defining Success

Francis doesn’t measure success by the number of cases won or dollars earned.

“For me, success is about the people I’ve helped,” he says. “If a client walks away feeling respected, informed, and like someone truly fought for them—that’s a win.”

He also believes that success includes integrity. “You have to do the job the right way. Not just what’s profitable or easy, but what’s honest,” he adds.

Additionally, he highlighted the vital role of empathy in understanding clients’ unique challenges and in developing solutions that align with their goals.

Pommett recounted stories from his career that illustrate how his empathetic approach has not only addressed legal issues but also fostered a stronger connection between him and his clients.
