Debate Between Techno-Optimists And Doomsdayers Inside Silicon Valley
After a year of the introduction of ChatGPT, there has been a rise in debate Between Techno-Optimists And Doomsdayers related to the future of AI and its rapid advancement. Furthermore, things started getting more serious after the ousting of ChatGPT CEO Sam Altman and his subsequent reinstatement.
There have been various tensions and divides between people who are embracing AI innovation and the ones who are pointing out the risks. Hence, there has been a rise in the debate – “e/acc vs. decals.”
Here, the “e/acc” (effective accelerationism) are the ones that support the full-speed development of AI. On the other hand, “decals” (deceleration) are the ones that point out the risks of AI.
According to CNBC,
“Techno-optimism is exactly what it sounds like: believers think more technology will ultimately make the world a better place. Andreessen wrote the Techno-Optimist Manifesto, a 5,000-plus word statement that explains how technology will empower humanity and solve all of its material problems.”
On the other hand, there are the “decals” that point out the AI alignment problem. This problem is about the issue that AI might get out of the control of the people. Many think that this issue is critical for the development of AI. In fact, this topic is one of the prominent ones in the tensions at the OpenAI boardroom.
Although many people are optimistic about the development of AI and do not want this to halt, there are companies that are working on the issues of AI alignment. Many are also concerned about AI safety as there has been increasing pressure from government officials and policymakers. The goal is to make the technology safe and responsible in the long run.
