Amazon Courts Sellers At China Summit As Temu And Shein Gain Momentum
Amazon is intensifying efforts to engage China-based sellers amidst rising competition from discount online retailers like Temu and Shein. The company announced plans for an “innovation center” near Shenzhen, promoting sellers in the Asia-Pacific region and providing access to its end-to-end supply chain service. Despite no longer operating in China, Amazon’s annual conference for Chinese sellers attracts thousands. In 2023, Chinese sellers on Amazon saw a 20% YoY increase in items sold, with a 30% growth in sellers exceeding $10 million in sales.
Rivals Temu and Shein, based in China, are gaining traction. Shein, with a recent confidential IPO filing, faces scrutiny over environmental impact and alleged forced labor. Temu, a digital bargain platform, saw a surge in ad impressions on Google, spending nearly twice as much time per user compared to Amazon and eBay. Amazon’s recent fee adjustments, particularly lowering commissions on clothing below $15, signal a strategic move to appeal to Shein and Temu merchants. Etsy, another player in the market, acknowledges the impact of these competitors while focusing on sustainable alternatives amid the growing demand for cheap goods.
